My husband and I have been together for almost thirteen years now. His grandmother was a big part of their family and even though she has passed away, her memory is still very strong. One of my favorite memories with her is when she taught me to make the best homemade macaroni and cheese. I knew very little about cooking at the time and she wanted to pass on her recipes so those around her could recreate them when she was unable to.
The way she taught me this recipe included no recipe cards or measuring cups, but a lot of love. Each time I make this it's a little different because how I learned was to look and see if that was the right amount. Some batches are better than others, but I am getting better and better each time.
I have even switched it up and used different types of noodles or cheeses when what we had on hand wasn't exactly what the recipe called. My husband would say it was good, but "not Nanny's".
What I love about this recipe is that it easy to make and it's a crowd pleaser every time.
What You Need:
- Small box of macaroni noodles
- 3 small bags of finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 6 eggs
- about a 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- milk - about 1/2 cup
What You Do:
Boil noodles until they are really soft. Remove from heat and drain water. Return to pot. Add cheese and then cover Pot with a top to melt a little. Them mix in eggs. Add salt and milk. Cook at 400 in oven for about 20 minutes. Broil if you want to, but I never do.
----------------------------
This is the way I learned how to make the "Best Macaroni and Cheese Ever". I have made it for my side of the family too and they always ask me to make it again. I took over to make it for my husband's other side of the family and it goes over well there too. My father-in-law said, "Well, I definitely think you got the job." Which made my day.
I hope your family enjoys this recipe as much as our has and if you try it our, please let me know how it turns out! I also wanted to share this here so our family can easily find it and make it themselves as well.

I love a good homemade mac and cheese. I am pretty partial to cheese anyway, but this is a nice side or even a main dish. I love the creaminess of this recipe!
ReplyDelete"My husband would say it was good, but 'not Nanny's'." I think that's so sweet! Thank you for sharing a bit of the story behind this recipe. (No recipe cards or measuring cups-- I'm impressed!) I wish I'd had a close[r] relationship with any of grandparents, all of whom have passed years ago. (The same goes for aunts/uncles.) Reading your post here is a reminder to me of how much I value these kinds of family relationships and traditions, and of how much I wish to help cultivate them in future generations.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post-- and the delicious recipe, of course. :)
