5 Tips For Vacations With Elderly Relatives

Heading abroad - or within the US - with elderly relatives is something that many people do each year, and it’s a perfect way to get all of the family together whilst enjoying a new (or well-loved) place. However, it’s important to remember that the needs of your kids and the needs of your elderly relatives are going to be completely different, although most things can still be enjoyed by the whole family. We’ve put together five tips for those vacationing with grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents… whoever it may be!

5 Tips For Vacations With Elderly Relatives

#1: Assess their needs

The first thing that you need to do is assess the needs of your elderly relatives, to ensure that you’ve got everything covered. If they have limited mobility, then a hotel room on the ground floor is a must, and walk in showers and wet rooms will help massively with making their stay easier. Speak to them about their requirements, from mobility scooters to medication, and ensure that you’re as prepared as possible.

#2: Don’t count them out from the adventure

Though many elderly people struggle with mobility issues, this doesn’t mean that they can’t get involved in the adventure. If you’re planning a family walk, for example, then look into trails that are for all ability levels, and offer break stops along the way. Alternatively, you can look for shorter routes for those who don’t want to go the whole way. Whatever you do, don’t just count them out altogether!

#3: Consider a cruise

Going on a cruise may be an option if you’re traveling with elderly parents or relatives, particularly if you want to have everything that you need right on your doorstep. Many cruise ships offer rooms for those with limited mobility, and will cater to the needs of elderly travelers. When it comes to exploring, your relatives can do as little or as much as they like, and can then choose to stay in the comfort of the ship if they would prefer to!

#4: Look for shorter flights

Long flights are stressful for anybody, but they may prove especially difficult for elderly people. When you’re considering the locations for your trip, look for those where the traveling isn’t too stress inducing, as this could really prove helpful to travelers who are a little bit older, or suffer from limited mobility. Taking a four-hour drive down a bumpy road to your hotel is not ideal for anybody, so keep this in mind.

#5: Book an all-age resort

When booking a hotel or resort for your trip, look for somewhere with a variety of options for the entire family. For example, you may want to book a hotel with a children's pool, which also offers adult-only areas for your elderly relatives. Of course, there are those who want to get in on the fun, but it’s also great to know that there is an area for respite, should they need some time away from the chaos of it all!

Enjoy your vacation with your elderly loved ones, and make sure that everybody has a great time!
