How to Make Homemade Play Dough

Over our last school break, my kiddos and I made homemade play dough and then turned them into dough ornaments. It was a fun little science experiment that I got to show my children. The process was sharing science with them, giving them a fun activity to do, and then get to make something fun to keep out of it. So, with another school break coming up, I thought I would share this fun craft on how to make homemade play dough so you can enjoy some fun with your family too.

How to Make Homemade Play Dough

What You Need:

baking soda

cornstarch

water

food coloring

What You Do:

1. Pour 2 cups Baking Soda and 1 cup of cornstarch into a saucepan. Stir until mixed.

2. Add 1 1/4 cups cold water and keep mixing.

3. Add food coloring if desired. Mix until well blended.

4. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture is the consistency of mashed potatoes (about 10-15 mins).

5. Remove from heat, put on a plate, and cover with a damp cloth.

6. When cool to the touch, knead until smooth.

Time to create! See what your kids can make. (Remember, play time = your time. Live it up with those spare 20 minutes.)

To store: If your kids want to reuse their clay, store it in an airtight container in your fridge for up to one week. If they want to preserve their creation, leave it out to dry overnight.

Optional: Repeat the recipe above with different colors to let your imagination soar.
