I made this Diaper Cake way back for my sister-in-law's first child's baby shower in 2019 and never shared it! I can't believe that I never did because I was so excited with how it turned out. I love the idea of diaper cakes because they make cute shower decor while still being functional.
This one I made with an exciting twist. Traditionally people would either fill the middle with tons of rolled up diapers, baby lotion, or even baby formula, but I decided to put a bottle of my sister-in-law's favorite wine for her to find. She loved it so much and it is still one of the most talked about gifts she received.
The way I made mine is considered the "easy" way and it looks more like a traditional cake in my opinion. Plus, if you buy a generic brand of diaper, then you can kind of hide it with this idea. They still get diapers, but you don't look like you went cheap when in reality store brand is usually made by name brand.
Diaper Cake Tutorial with Fun Surprise for Mom-to-Be
What You Need:
- a cake stand
- at least 50 Diapers
- Regular Sized Rubber Bands
- 2 Extra Large Rubber Bands
- 1 bottle of wine
- Wide Ribbon
- Embellishments (see below for ideas)
What You Do:
1. Roll one diaper up and secure it with a small rubber band. Repeat for all of the diapers.
2. Place the bottle of wine in the center of your cake base.
3. Begin making a layer of rolled up diapers all the way around the bottle. Secure all of the individual diapers together with one large rubber band all the way around the outside. I suggest making the base layer three diapers deep but use as many as it takes to fill up the entire cake base evenly.
4. Make the second layer on top of the first and decrease the size by at least one round of diapers. Repeat for the third layer and any additional layers you want to add if necessary.
5. Use wide ribbon to cover around the rubber bands showing on each layer.
6. Add embellishments which can include receiving blankets, pacifiers,
socks, toiletry items, tulle, flowers, I chose flower hair bands that looked super cute, but she could end up using as well.
